Social Marketing

As part of Afiya's ongoing commitment to improving the health and social care of BME communities, we are currently developing a series of key recommendations around social marketing.

Public Health is constantly evolving to cater for a changing population which is increasingly diverse. However, BME communities are not often involved in the development of health initiatives and instead, in many circumstances, are treated as an afterthought.

Through our key recommendations, The Afiya Trust will show that health policy makers and commissioners need to use social marketing techniques to properly identify and address the health and social care needs of BME populations.

Professor Jeff French, CEO at Strategic Social Marketing, is working with Afiya to develop a clear perspective on social marketing and BME communities. Afiya's social marketing paper, to be published at the end of 2010, will form the basis of a discussion on the current challenges facing policy makers and how these can be overcome. It will also underpin a conference on social marketing and BME communities to be held in 2011.

The Afiya Trust is a national charity that works to reduce inequalities in health and social care provision for people from racialised communities. Find out about the local and national networks we support. We liaise and work with central government departments and policymakers to ensure the BME perspective isn’t lost.
