Mapping Project

As part of our partnership approach, Afiya participated in No decision about me without me, the National Voices Members’ Conference and Annual General Meeting on 16 September 2010, which aimed to provide a collective voice for National Voices members on the white paper Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS and associated proposals.

The purpose of the work, based on a mapping process by Paul Macey of The Creative Collective Media Ltd, is twofold:

  • To develop the database of organisations providing health and social care to BME communities across the UK.
  • To identify key issues impacting upon organisations and the implications of the recently published government health white paper for the sector.

This section of the work will:

  • Capture the experiences, key issues and concerns of BME health and social care organisations.
  • Identify what steps and actions are needed to provide support to the sector.
  • Invite and encourage people to take part in:
    • online consultations
    • one-to-one interviews
    • be part of Afiya’s new social networking portal

To facilitate the second part of the work, Afiya gathered information on a one-to-one basis with a cross section of service providers and through workshops at its social and health manifesto launched in March 2010, The Big Society workshop in hosted recently in Derby and via two roundtable discussions in Bristol and Manchester.

The Afiya Trust is a national charity that works to reduce inequalities in health and social care provision for people from racialised communities. Find out about the local and national networks we support. We liaise and work with central government departments and policymakers to ensure the BME perspective isn’t lost.
