The Afiya Trust works on local, regional and national policy concerns and lobbies on all levels. On a local level, we work with BME groups who feel, or are experiencing, the disproportionate impact of the current public and voluntary sector funding cuts. We also work with those who feel that they are not being heard by the relevant health and social care agencies. At a regional level, we work in partnership with organisations to highlight key aspects of health inequalities that haven’t been considered in policy planning and development. We also focus on user and user-led campaigns and initiatives through our national networks – from mental health to carers. Essentially we work on a national level. Our events have attracted current and former government ministers including the current Minister of State for Social Care Paul Burstow MP, who made his maiden speech at our Carers Roundtable event in London in the summer of 2010. We are approached on a regular basis for our views by government departments such as the Department of Health, professional bodies such as the General Medical Council, the Royal Colleges, trade unions such as Unison and other professional bodies when they are planning changes in policy and guidance. |
